Ok so I’m all jazzed up about Wifi consistently working on my Gateway Laptop but I have noticed some odd behavior with the wifi connection. When the laptop is connected to the network via the etherenet cable and the wifi is running, the downstream for the wifi card is active and the upstream for the ethernet card is active.

Wifi pulling data from the internet.
Ethernet pushing data to the internet.

Does that make any sense?

This is an update to my previous post Installing Xubuntu 6.06 on a Gateway Laptop.

Summary
Xubuntu 7.04 is a derivative from the popular Ubuntu Linux distro with the difference being Xubuntu uses the Xfce Window Manager instead of Gnome or KDE. Xfce is a light weight Open Source window manager that is fast and efficient which makes Xubuntu ideal for lower end computers. Or if you want a super fast system try Xubuntu on a newer system like a my Gateway MX6440 Laptop (1.8Ghz Turion64 with a gig of RAM) and you’ll be amazed at how fast Linux can run.

Xubuntu Cracks into the To 10 list at Distrowatch.com

Even though it’s not the best and most accurate form of measuring a Linux Distro’s popularity Xubuntu is currently at Number 6 in the last 7 Days Time Span. This is due of course to the release of Xubuntu 6.10 last Thursday October 26 but it also tells you something about what people want from Linux. Simplicity. And Xubuntu is all about simplicity. Xubuntu is a bare bones Linux Distro that ships with just enough applications to get a newbie up and running with out over burdening them with a million IM and Email clients.

Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Has Been Released

UPDATED - 2006-10-27 @ 13:30 EST
**NOTE**
There is a bug when selecting to do a manual config of the partitions. Even if you select a root partition it throws an warning that no root partition has been selected. Thus causing you to never get past the screen.
This will (should/could/may) only affect people with dual boot systems who do not want to go for the default of formatting the whole drive and need to keep any existing partitions intact.

For those that already have Xubuntu 6.06x there is an alternative to upgrading.

To do an upgrade read this.

There is also the READ THIS FIRST page.

I am doing a manual install by first installing Xubuntu 6.06 and then using this guide with the Xubuntu 6.10 Alternate Install CD.

Xubuntu 6.10 Beta is Out

October 3rd, 2006 by jay

As of Xubuntu 6.10 Beta came out last week (2006-09-28) .

Right out of the box I didn’t find anthing really new to report on. The default fonts look a little cleaner due to X.org 7.1 and it still lacks support for BCM4318 AirForce Wireless Card .

I checked xubuntu.org and they haven’t updated the site since the 6.06 release of Xubuntu back on 2006-06-01.

Anyway Xubuntu still rocks my Gateway 6440MX Laptop and with continued community support Xubuntu can only get better.
