Hacking Nautilus with G-Scripts

August 7th, 2006 by jay
, ,

While updating Wired HowTo Guide Linux Style I came across G-Script which is a collection of scripts for use in Gnome’s Nautilus file manager.

And as things go I was searching for a way to add shred to the context-menu of Nautilus just like you can with Thunar plug-ins and ended up finding a new toy to tinker with.

A nautilus script is just an executable shell script (usually bash) that is placed in a special scripts directory so that the Nautilus graphical shell can find it. This is a really neat function of Nautilus, because it allows you to extend the functionality of the file browser to do just about anything. ~ G-Script FAQ

Using Microsoft’s Virtual PC with Linux

August 3rd, 2006 by jay

While I’m at work I use Windows. While I’m at home I use Linux.
While I’m at work I’m usually working. While I’m at home I’m usually working on my next Linux or Programming HOWTO.

Well it’s been a slow copule of weeks at work and I don’t very work to do that is urgent and I’d really like to crank out some Linux howto’s but it’s kind of hard to do on a Windows PC.

Then I discovered Microsoft’s VirtualPC 2004 which is FREE and now I’m posting this from Firefox running on Xubuntu via VirtualPC.

So if or when you’re stuck on a Windows PC and you want to run a Linux LiveCD this article’s for you.

HOWTO: Create Screencasts using Wink on Ubuntu

August 1st, 2006 by jay
,
Aug 11 2006 - UPDATE
THIS TUTORIAL IS NOT COMPLETE.
It was published by accident via technotati scanning the site.
But for some reason http://screencasting.de has linked to this howto and is driving a fair bit of traffic here. So somebody is finding it useful.

Over the past few months I keep seeing tutorials and howto’s on varying tech subject distributed via screencasts. If done properly I think screencats are very useful. On the other hand I have seen a few that were toture to watch. With broad-band, cheap memory and cheap storage it seems that ‘casting is the next small big thing. I also could have missed the boat and ‘casting could be like so last month.

Anyway after doing some reasearch into the subject of ‘casting on Linux I found Wink, Tutorial and Presentation creation software. Wink is Freeware (not OSS), cross-platform (it has a Windows Client as well), it has audio recording, it outputs to Flash and Standalone EXE and a few other formats, and it entirly GUI driven.
