HP Pavilion ze4560 and Linux

June 27th, 2006 by jay

I had an HP Pavilion ze4560 but it “died” so I got a new one via my Best Buy warranty.
Spec: AMD Mobile 2500+ (1.8 Ghz) 512 RAM 40GBHD with a Broadcom Wireless Card.
The wifi card worked once in Knoppix but I messed with someting and it never worked in Linux again :(

Durring the 2.5 years I owned this laptop I was able to run almost every Linux distro without any real headaches. In fact the list of distros that did not work is suprisingly very short.

Linux Distros that Did Not Work
Slackware 10.2 or 10.1
StarCom
EasyLinux
PCLinuxOS (This worked but it did not kick on the CPU Fan)
RedHat 9 (Keyboard stopped working whne installer started)
Gentoo
WhiteBoxLinux

Linux Distros that Did Work
OpenSuSE 10.x (Performance went to crap after a few weeks)
Fedora Core 3, 4, 5
SLAX 5.x
SimplyMEPIS 5.?
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu 5.10
SLAMPP 1.0 & 2.0
Knoppix 3.9, 4.x, 5.x
Kanotix 2005-4 & 2006-4 RC?
CentOS

I recommend Kanotix because it reconigzed all of the HW, I could access NTFS drives and I could play MP3’s right out of the box.
