Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Has Been Released

October 27th, 2006 by jay

**NOTE**
There is a bug when selecting to do a manual config of the partitions. Even if you select a root partition it throws an warning that no root partition has been selected. Thus causing you to never get past the screen.
This will (should/could/may) only affect people with dual boot systems who do not want to go for the default of formatting the whole drive and need to keep any existing partitions intact.

For those that already have Xubuntu 6.06x there is an alternative to upgrading.

To do an upgrade read this.

There is also the READ THIS FIRST page.

I am doing a manual install by first installing Xubuntu 6.06 and then using this guide with the Xubuntu 6.10 Alternate Install CD.

These are my notes on installing Xubuntu 6.10 on my Gateway MX6440 Laptop.

So far I made 4 failed attempts to upgrade Xubuntu from 6.06 to 6.10 and here are my notes:

Install 1
I downloaded Xubuntu 6.10 i386 and booted the my laptop up. I was going through the install wizard but it got stuck on the manual partition config. (see above). I tried to restart the machine into the previous install of Xubuntu 6.06 but the installer somehow over wrote the root partition!?

Install 2
This time I reloaded 6.06 and did an update (not upgrade) to update the system. Once it hade updated everything I followed the directions in the EdgyUpgrades guide and and opted to download the files.
About 10 minutes into downloading the computer froze. Click! Click! Click! Nothing.

Install 3
After a reboot I again followed the directions in the EdgyUpgrades guide but this time I opted to use a CD of 6.10 for its’ installation media.
About 3/4 of the way through I stupidly clicked the the lock workstation button. OOPS!
The screen saver came on but was displaying a text error that it couldn’t find some libraries.
So I entered my user info and hit login but it kept saying “Sorry!!” and then just go back to being locked.
I tried to login in a few more times but gave up.

Install 4
After another reboot and 2+/- hours of time wasted I started the install process again. Every thing was going fine but at exactly 30 minutes after the system hadn’t been touched it went into screen saver mode!! GAHH!
Again it was displaying an error message and again it wouldn’t let me log in.

When I get home this evening I’ll give it one more shot.

(Who am I kidding? I’ll probably spend my entire weekend giving it “one more shot”!)

Which is why I prefer fresh install to the messy apt dist-upgrade.

Thanks for this information. I need it for a long time.
